MW | Real Unreal | Pitcher Plants

These sculptures are for the Carnivorous Caverns in MW’s Real Unreal.

They are 5 floor mounted dioramas that show captured creatures being slowly dissolved inside the juices of the pitcher plants.

There were several design challenges in the creation of this piece: Getting light into the sculptures without tech in a dimly lit room, mounting to the floor, creating a replaceable and maintainable plexi surface that blended into the sculpt, hiding hardware, pre-existing sculpture/ armatures, de-incentivizing sitting and standing, and integrating foliage — to name a few

Thanks to Josh Meyers, Zeve Cohen, and Emilio Pinchera for the work and support you supplied to the project.

Below, you can see some of my process:

There’s a ton of detail work, and who knows if anyone will ever take the time to look at it, so here it is:

P.S. Oh my glob it sucks to paint and sculpt inside of things that are shaped like buckets. Just design areound that whenever possible. This was totally giving me Faerie Orb flashbacks.

I took this piece over from Aubrey Shwartz because she was pregnant.

This is a reminder that artwork is frequently dangerous due to exposure to chemicals, dust, etc.

This shouldn’t be taken lightly. Wear that PPE! Eliminate Exposure! Read your SDS sheets. There are people who have cadmium poisoning and shake uncontrollably. There are people who damage nerves from repetitive work and stop being able to use their hands. There are graffiti artists who wear diapers due to inhalant exposure. Be kind to your bodies. Wear your freaking gloves. Open a window. It’s so so important.

per ususal, this is all coming from a real life person. And these two sculptures were made by Zeve Cohen! That resin print is crazy good.
